5 O'Clock

At five minutes to five, the library was nearly empty. Most students had drifted out for tea or society meetings. The whir of the ceiling fans sounded louder than usual, a flat metallic hum that made Mira’s stomach knot tighter.

She stood just inside the doorway, hugging her notebook against her chest. She had told herself she wouldn’t come — that answering a note from a boy she barely knew was foolish. Yet here she was, her feet moving before her mind could stop them.
